All White Woven Coverlet 1860-1900
1860-1900. 86x97. Hudson, MI, USA. You can feel and appreciate the work that went into this all-white coverlet. Woven counterpane made to look like a trapunto quilt with a three dimensional design on both sides. The warp and weft are cotton, making the piece quite heavy. This is likely to be machine woven, and probably not hand woven (no mistakes, irregularities). The creator clearly wanted to make curved corners on the bottom edges and pulled up the weaving and the fringe and sewed curves into the corners, but did not finish his or her attempt so that the bottom of the coverlet now looks akimbo. There is a commercial fringe treadle sewn to three sides (treadle, because there are gaps in the stitching). The roving forming the design is probably of a different fabric. The design consists of a medallion center with concentric circles of leaves and scrolls. This is then surrounded with more floral designs and scrolls, and then a Greek design frame surrounds all. Light staining and discoloration. Condition is good.
