Crib, Doll and Youth Quilts Quilt Tip: Because of their rough use, crib quilts are not easy to find. Collecting them can be very rewarding, and they are very easy to display.

687 Rooftops, Log Cabin or Box and Blocks, mid 20th century, 46x56, West Texas. Machine pieced and, of course, hand tied. This cutie could be improvisational but it looks pretty well planned to me.It contains several textured fabrics, and probably several synthetics, including the back which has a slight nap. I think it would be a child's favorite. Excellent condition. $100

565 Star Crib Quilt with Prairie Points, 36x48, Mid 20th century. This is a lovely, clean, completely intact crib quilt with pleasing pastel colors. The quilting is 5-7st/in with floral petals around large circles. Perfect for a baby shower. $95

413 Redwork, dated "1921", 48x65, Illinois. Each charming block depicts an animal representing the personality (one assumes) of the named person, with an elephant for "Grandma Bauer" ( I bet Grandma made this quilt) and an eagle for "Grandpa Bauer". The not-exactly-plumb sashing is Turkey red and the double border is red and white. The backing is white. The very special feature of this quilt is the free-hand machine quilting in curved lines up and down the sashing. The quilt is in excellent, clean and bright condition. This is a delight for the redwork collector or for any young child. $350

415 Duck and Ducklings, 1900 or earlier, 30x36, Illinois. This classic pattern has been worked into a lovely crib quilt in indigo, navy and white prints. There is a double border, navy binding and a white flour sack backing, saying "Pillsbury Flour". The quilting is 7 st/in in parallel lines 5/8 inch apart and going right through each polka dot. The blocks are done in contour quilting. There are two small areas in which the black polka dots have worn through, or popped. This is very clean and crisp and a wonderful hanging or usable crib quilt. $550

414 Wholecloth, reversible, 1920's, 34x44, made by WJ. Achepohl of Galesburg, Illinois. Seafoam blue- green cotton sateen is one side, ivory the other. The quilting is based on the medallion style of the English wholecloths, but has its own Midwest flavor. The quilting is 9st/in with a rosette in the center of two feather wreaths.Tiny diamonds serve as background in the center, and larger diamonds enclose the outer sinuous feather wreath. This quilt was made by an expert who made several appliques in these pages. There is a knife edge. This has not been used and is in excellent condition. An almost matching full-size wholecloth quilt is also available. $595

397 Eight Point Star, ca 1930-40, 34x44. This is an Amish-style crib quilt in teal and violet with a triple border and a true blue backing (photo 2). The cotton is a heavy twill weave, although the quilt is thin. The quilting is very good at 6 st/in. in black thread, forming cloud clusters on the border, with flowers and contour quilting in the center. It's a beautiful quilt, in excellent condition. These original traditional Amish quilts are getting harder and harder to find. $450

279, "Quaddie Quiltie", designed by Ruby Short McKim, Redwork, 1930-40, 66x76. This is one of those published quilt patterns, by a noted quilter of the depression era. Ruby McKim's embroidery designs include such animal friends, appropriately clothed and labeled, as "Jerry Musk Rat, Billy the Possum, Hooty the Wise Old Owl", etc. The center is "Farmer Brown's Boy". There is a triple border in pink and white, the embroidery is in pink , and each block is bordered in pink chain stitch. There is a replacement strip of pink at the very top. Otherwise, this charming quilt is in excellent condition and, furthermore, has excellent quilting. The plain blocks are filled with flower and leaves, and the embroidered blocks are filled with squares . The quilting is 10 st/in.. $500
316 Four-Patch Chain Crib Quilt, 34x51, late 19th century. This beautifully designed old quilt is made of 1.25-inch patches of dark and light wools alternating with plaid red and gray flannel. The flannel is the backing as well. The blocks are aligned so that bright diagonals streak across the quilt. This is tied with red yarn. A few patches have wear, otherwise the quilt is in very good condition. It is a highly collectable crib quilt from a century ago. $325

482 One Patch with sashing and border Doll comforter, ca 1900, 15x20. This has nice shirting materials and a soft blue print as well as the mourning print used as the sashing. The backing is a very unusual red print stripe with a lavender on white alternating stripe. It is tied and has a few discolorations. You'll want it just for that red and lavender stripe! $50

378 Courthouse Steps Log Cabin Crib Quilt, 1860-80, 45x52, from the estate and farm of Gladys Hasty Carroll, a prolific writer of the 1970's and 1980's, Maine. These quilts (and those on other pages) remained in the family on the Hasty farm from their early beginings, and were used and well taken care of, with repairs made as needed. The log cabin blocks include a variety of hand pieced vintage cotton prints, including many madders. On three sides, there is a wide border of alternating triangles of an indigo print and a tan and red print. The backing is a satin weave solid indigo fabric, (some repairs, several rips). The backing is attached to the front with a loose running stitch of brown thread. The indigo binding is machine stitched, and remnants of old braid are attached to the top as hanging hooks. The quilt has a patina of age, and a couple of the pieces on the front have wear. This is a fabulous find for the quilt historian or crib quilt collector. $1900
